New Delhi: Currently active Coronavirus cases in India are recorded at 1,51,708. Informing about the same, the Union Health Ministry said on Thursday emphasised that the surge was due to a rise in daily new cases in certain states.

A total of 16,738 new daily cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours. The Health Ministry stated that 89.57 percent of the new cases are from seven states. These are Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh.

Maharashtra reported the highest daily new cases at 8,807, followed by Kerala with 4,106 cases.

The Union government has formed high-level multi-disciplinary teams and deputed them to Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir (UT) to determine the reasons behind the surge in new Coronavirus cases. These teams will also coordinate with the state health departments in carrying out control and containment measures.

The Central government has also written to states and Union Territories advising them to take up aggressive measures to break the chain of transmission.

They have been asked to increase testing in a focussed manner in the affected districts with the appropriate split of RT-PCR and rapid antigen tests. They are also asked to also ensure that all symptomatic negatives of antigen tests are compulsorily tested via RT-PCR tests.

The Covid infected persons are to be isolated, all their close contacts are to be traced and also tested without delay. A critical review of the emerging situation needs to be carried out on a regular basis with district officials concerned.

Meanwhile, India's total recoveries so far stand at 1,07,38,50.

"The gap between total recovered cases and the active cases is constantly rising and stands at 10,586,793 today. A total of 11,799 recoveries were registered in a span of 24 hours," the ministry said.
