Summer Game Fest 2022 showcased a plethora of games in detail, but the event was devoid of any jaw-dropping announcements. Nevertheless, it still helped fill an E3-shaped hole for gaming enthusiasts, as the annual gaming event was cancelled this year due to COVID-related complications. However, thanks to host Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest 2022, fans got a glimpse of exciting games that are set to launch in the coming months, including a PS5 remaster of the critically acclaimed The Last of Us. Here’s a look at all the major announcements from Summer Game Fest.


The Last of Us PS5 remake


Although the news of a PS5 remake of Naughty Dog’s epochal survival game The Last of Us got leaked just before the Summer Game Fest kicked off, it was still one of the most exciting developments for fans of the franchise. Armed with refreshed animations and 60fps performance, The Last of Us PS5 remake will also bring in new combat options and an enemy AI based on The Last of Us Part II. It will be released on September 2.


Apart from the remake, Naughty Dog also teased that it is working on a multiplayer game. Yet unnamed, the project started off as a multiplayer mode for The Last of Us Part II, and went on to become an entity of its own.



Marvel’s Midnight Suns


Developed by Firaxis Games of Civilization fame, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a tactical RPG featuring a darker version of popular Marvel superheroes such as the Avengers, Runaways, X-Men, and Midnight Sons. The game was first announced at Gamescom 2021. It is set to release on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on October 7.


Aliens: Dark Descent


Touted as a squad-based single-player action title set in the “Aliens” franchise, Dark Descent wants you to lead a team of loyal soldiers as they take on a Xenomorph outbreak on Moon Lethe. Aliens: Dark Descent will launch on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2023.



The Callisto Protocol


Developed by the makers of the Dead Space trilogy, The Callisto Protocol promises to bring everything that made Dead Space great — a spine-chilling setting, horrifying monsters, and enough jump scares to make you look for an extra pair of pants. The Callisto Protocol is set to release on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.


Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2


While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has already announced its October 28 release date and shared its first reveal trailer. At Summer Game Fest, fans got a full gameplay video of the “Dark Water” level, where series favourites Soap and Ghost infiltrated an enemy boat in the middle of a violent storm. The chosen level was particularly effective in showcasing the various elements of the shooter, as fans got to see how Modern Warfare 2’s indoor combat and outdoor action play out.



Flashback 2


Back in 1992, Flashback defined what a cinematic platformer should look and play like. Three decades later, the game is finally getting a sequel. While the trailer didn’t reveal much, it is still exciting to see a classic platformer getting released in the midst of first- and third-person shooters. Flashback 2 will be released on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch later this year.


Goat Simulator 3


And finally, the game we are the most excited about — Goat Simulator 3. No, you didn’t read it wrong. There was no Goat Simulator 2. Goat Simulator decided to skip the second game altogether and bring out the third chapter. Why, you ask? Well, if you played the wonderfully glitchy Goat Simulator, you have a pretty fair idea of what to expect from the franchise. We expect to see even more glitches, even more goat mods that don’t make sense, and even more crazy fun than what the original delivered.
