The fourth and final season of the hugely popular show ‘Succession’ will premiere on HBO on March 26 (US). The early reviews of the first four episodes are already out, and it looks like the show will bow out on a high. The critics have given a thumbs up to the first four episodes of the show and have called it a "masterwork" and one of "the greatest achievements of TV."
'Succession' follows media baron Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and his four children, Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Siobhan (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Connor (Alan Ruck) as the siblings compete to take over the family media conglomerate Waystar Royco.
The fourth and final season of the Emmy-winning series will follow the events of the third season finale in December 2021.
"The sale of media conglomerate Waystar Royco to tech visionary Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard) moves ever closer. The prospect of this seismic sale provokes existential angst and familial division among the Roys as they anticipate what their lives will look like once the deal is complete. A power struggle ensues as the family weighs up a future where their cultural and political weight is severely curtailed," the synopsis read.
Rolling Stone’s Alan Sepinwall wrote that the fourth season is “determined to end its celebrated run on the highest of highs.” A part of the review read, “Succession has, like The Wire and The Sopranos, historically finished seasons even stronger than they start. And these early episodes already put us at the loftiest of levels.”
Indie Wire's Ben Travers said that the last season "will annihilate you." A part of the review read, "Based on the first four episodes — as well as the three preceding seasons — there’s no reason to think such a finale is out of reach. And after these initial ending hours, it’s also clear that “Succession” isn’t slowing down. So you can let it consume you or, as a wise man once said, you can f**k off. It’s still the Roys’ world, for at least one more year. "
Joshua Alston of Variety called fourth season a “brisk, brutal and hilarious final season.” He wrote, “While the season takes a bit longer to catch fire than its predecessors, once the shady dealing begins in earnest, “Succession” is more intense than ever. And with the series finale in sight, the show has a full tank of gas and an 800-pound gorilla’s foot on the pedal. Better than ever doing business with you, “Succession.”
Screen Rants’ Graeme Guttmann wrote, “Rarely does a show get to go out on top and, judging from the first four hours of season 4, that's exactly what Succession is doing. Season 4 may take some time to really find its rhythm, but these episodes bring with them an air of finality that makes every bitter quip and acerbic insult land that much harder as the deck constantly reshuffles.”
Collider’s Samantha Coley said that the show is returning with “outstanding performances and a satisfying story.”
A part of the review read, “Succession Season 4 is telling a more cohesive story than ever before, with all the threads weaving together quite nicely. The result is a season that is even more engaging than its predecessors, leaving you hanging on every word of snappy dialogue. Succession has always been a deceptively emotional series, with people who don't watch the show absolutely baffled by the lengthy dissections that fans can pull from single shots from key moments. Season 4 takes that even further, with deeper performances that enrich the relationships between nearly every combination of characters.”
