New Delhi: The much-anticipated historical drama ‘Thangalaan’, which featured Chiyaan Vikram in the main role, had a solid opening weekend. The film was released in three languages—Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. Industry tracker Sacnilk reports that the film's earnings in the three versions were Rs 11 crore in Tamil, Rs 1.5 crore in Telugu, and Rs 10 lakh in Malayalam. The film reached Rs 12.6 crore in total earnings and that too on the first day of its release. 


The total occupancy rate in Tamil shows for ‘Thangalaan’, directed by Pa Ranjith, was a remarkable 71.64 %. With 592 showings, the film had an occupancy rate of 81.5% in Chennai alone. The current Dhanush-starring film ‘Raayan’ is being compared to ‘Thangalaan’ due to its opening figures. ‘Raayan’ had Rs 13.65 crore on its first day and Rs 150.25 crore globally after two weeks. 


In the Telugu area, ‘Thangalaan’ is up against ‘Mr. Bachchan’ and ‘Double iSmart’, while in Tamil, it's up against ‘Demonte Colony’ and ‘Raghu Thatha’. On opening day, ‘Mr. Bachchan’ made Rs 5.3 crore and ‘Double iSmart’ made 7.5 crore.






‘Thangalaan’ is now topping the box office in Tamil Nadu; the next several days will show whether it can keep up with the competition.
