Nayanthara on Saturday accused Dhanush of being “vengeful” and blocking the use of a three-second clip from the 2015 film 'Naanum Rowdy Thaan' in her documentary ‘Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale.’ While her post gained widespread attention, the situation has taken a new turn with allegations against her husband, filmmaker Vignesh Shivan.
Director-producer SS Kumaran has claimed that Vignesh Shivan used the title LIC for his upcoming project despite being denied permission. Kumaran said that the title had been registered under his banner, Suma Pictures, since 2015. He stated that he had previously addressed this issue in December 2023.
What Kumaran said about Vignesh
In a letter released on Saturday, Kumaran wrote, “Dhanush has served you a legal notice for using three seconds of footage without his permission. However, your husband has used the title LIC even though he knew it was registered under my production house. He asked me for permission through someone, and I had not granted it. Still, he went ahead and marketed the film as LIC. How do you justify this?”
Kumaran explained that the title LIC was closely tied to a story he had been working on, and for that reason, he declined permission. He alleged that Vignesh Shivan proceeded with the title regardless, questioning the filmmaker’s sense of accountability.

Kumaran accuses Vignesh of taking advantage of his position
Kumaran further accused Shivan of taking advantage of his position as a smaller producer, stating, “You patiently waited for two years for permission from someone more powerful than you to use that footage, but you trampled all over me as I’m a small producer. That has really upset me and you need to answer for that in a God’s forum.”
The producer also expressed the emotional toll this incident has taken on him and its impact on his work. “Every filmmaker invests time and money in their films. If you wish to use something for your business, you must obtain legal permission. You are not doing anything for free but trying to exploit our footage and title for free, setting a terrible precedent in the industry,” he concluded.
