Veteran actor Mumtaz and Shammi Kapoor’s song ‘Aajkal tere mere pyaar ke charche’ is one of the most popular songs of Bollywood even after more than 50 years. The on-screen chemistry of the duo was loved by the audience.

Mumtaz, who was 16 at that time, was in a relationship with Shammi Kapoor for a brief period of time and they later went their separate ways as the actress wanted to focus on her career.

In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, the actress opened up about her relationship with Shammi Kapoor. She said that she loved him tremendously and felt sad that she couldn’t marry him.

“I loved him tremendously. I believe Shammiji also loved me a lot. I felt sad that I couldn’t marry him. I was only around 17. He was 18 years older than me. It was too early for me to get married. Mujhe kucch banna tha,” she told Pinkvilla.

She said their separation was not unpleasant and there was a mutual understanding. She also revealed that Shammi Kapoor was very sweet and caring towards him.

“We separated with understanding. He didn’t do anything to leave a khalish (ache) in my heart. He was very sweet and caring towards me. But you can’t fight destiny. Honestly, had I got married, it wouldn’t have worked. Because I’d have always held a regret in my heart. I wanted to act. I wanted to achieve something. The Kapoor family was strict about their bahus not working in films. Nevertheless, Shammiji married such a wonderful lady, a beautiful person. Neila Deviji’s such a sweetheart. She suited him perfectly and handled him so well,” the Do Raaste actress added.

Mumtaz tied the knot with Ugandan businessman Mayur Madhvani in 1974 and they have two daughters Natasha and Tanya.
