In case you think that drama only happens in TV shows and movies, then we have to tell you the about the unexpected drama which took place during a beauty pageant. Can you imagine a former pageant winner striping off the crown of a new winner at a beauty contest? Yes, it did happen. Pushpika De Silva, who was crowned as Mrs Sri Lanka, suffered head injuries after she was attacked by previous year’s winner at the crowning ceremony.
In a surprising turn of events, Mrs Sri Lanka 2019 Caroline Jurie decided to snatch the crown from Pushpika after she finished her victory walk. Jurie awarded the crown to the first runner-up, leaving everyone surprised. De Silva left the stage in tears after the crown was taken from her. The incident aired on national television.
The Colombo Gazette shared a video from beauty pageant wherein Jurie can be seen saying that a divorced woman can’t win the contest. She said that the rules don’t allow a divorcee to hold the title and hence, the crown should go to the first runner-up.
De Silva penned a long post on social media to squash the allegations and inform that she suffered head injuries. She said that she is undergoing treatment for the head injuries. Pushpika added that she would take legal action against to ‘correct the injustice’.
The ‘Mrs Sri Lanka’ further clarified that she was not a divorcee and challenged the naysayers to submit her divorce papers. She said that she can't bear the pain her son feels when he sees her in pain.
The organisers, while talking to BBC, confirmed that Pushpika was not a divorcee as claimed by the previous winner. Her crown will be returned to her. The Mrs World organisation has started an investigation in the matter.
De Silva, who received massive support post the incident, dedicated her victory to single mothers. “I dedicate this title to single mothers, who are suffering to raise their kids alone,” she was quoted as saying in a press conference.
