Bollywood has always found inspiration in novels and books. One such example is the recently released Netflix movie 'Jaane Jaan'. The movie is an official adaptation of the 2005 novel 'The Devotion of Suspect X' by Keigo Higashino. The movie directed by Sujoy Ghosh marks the OTT debut of Kareena Kapoor Khan. The movie also includes Vijay Varma and Jaideep Ahlawat in lead roles. If you enjoyed this thrilling mystery and are looking for more movies based on books or novels, here are a few suggestions.

Here are some of the Indian movies that we think did a great job of taking inspiration from books.

Gangubai Kathiawadi

The movie is based on the story of the real-life Hiramandi red light district mafia queen Gangubai, who also happened to operate brothels and advocate for the rights of the sex workers who worked there. Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges's Mafia Queens of Mumbai served as inspiration for the movie. Alia Bhatt plays the lead role of Gangubai, and the movie is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Haider

We all have adored Shahid Kapoor's performance in ‘Haider’, which was based on Shakespeare's Hamlet. This movie is among the greatest because of its excellent storyline and outstanding performances, which accurately portray the volatile situation in Kashmir today.

7 Khoon Maaf

Vishal Bhardwaj helmed the dark comedy-drama thriller 7 Khoon Maaf. The movie starring Priyanka Chopra is based on a short tale by Ruskin Bond, Susanna's Seven Husbands.

Lootera

Henry's short story, ‘The Last Leaf,’ inspired director Vikramaditya Motwane to create the movie ‘Lootera’, starring Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha. ‘Lootera’ is a 1950s-set love story with heartache, forgiveness, and yes, a collection of swoon-worthy tunes.

The Girl On The Train

Paula Hawkins’ one of the finest psychological thriller novels of the same name served as the inspiration for this movie. Starring Parineeti Chopra, the movie tells the narrative of an alcoholic and an amnesic woman.

Devdas

'Devdas', starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit was released in 2002. The Bengali book of the same name written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1917 served as the inspiration for the tragic love story.

Saawariya

The movie 'Saawariya', directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is an adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky's short Russian novel 'White Nights.' Ranbir Kapoor’s Bollywood debut tells the narrative of a young man's coming of age while also being a love story.

Many people who would never pick up a book in favour of a movie have been drawn in and impressed by these adaptations.
