New Delhi: The horror-comedy sequel 'Stree 2' starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor has been making waves in cinemas since its debut on August 15. The film has not only gotten off to an incredible start, but it has also shattered several records, solidifying its status as a massive hit. According to trade experts, the film has the potential to earn more than Rs 35–40 crore on its first day, making it the most successful Bollywood opener of 2024.
Starting at 9:30 PM on the night before its worldwide release, ‘Stree 2’ had a few paid previews. Thanks to the unprecedented level of interest, the film broke the record for most paid previews ever established by Shah Rukh Khan's ‘Chennai Express’. Despite Chennai Express’s 2013 nett revenue of Rs 6.75 crore in paid preview, ‘Stree 2’ reportedly grossed close to Rs 8 crore, according to early trade estimates, making it the highest-grossing paid preview film.
Compared to Shah Rukh Khan's 'Dunki', which had an advance booking of Rs 15.41 crore and 5.5 lakh seats sold on the first day, Stree 2's first-day advance booking was 53% higher.
‘Stree 2’ Vs ‘Khel Khel Mein’ And ‘Vedaa’
That isn't the end of the record-breaking, however. In addition, ‘Stree 2’ has racked up remarkable numbers of presale tickets for its big debut. Excluding paid screenings, the film sold an incredible 3,92,000 tickets on the first day of its release on August 14 at major multiplex chains. This number towers over previous big releases, such as ‘Vedaa’ (starring John Abraham) and ‘Khel Khel Mein’ (starring Akshay Kumar), both of which had trouble breaking even at the box office.
While ‘Khel Khel Mein’ made Rs 1.54 crore from 47,202 tickets sold, only 28,000 of them were sold via national chains. Not only that but ‘Vedaa’ did much worse, earning Rs 1.49 crore from a total of 61,040 tickets sold, including barely 22,000 sold via national chains.
