'Simran' REVIEW: Kangana Ranaut's power packed performance makes Hansal Mehta's film a worth watch!
Star-cast: Kangana Ranaut, Soham Shah, Hiten Kumar
Director: Hansal Mehta
Duration: 2 Hours 4 minutes
Rating: 3 Stars
With 'Simran' Kangana Ranaut once again proves that she is the 'Queen'of Bollywood when it comes to delivering a solid role. She has outdone her own previous movies with this one. The movie is loosely based on the life of Sandeep Kaur, an NRI in the United States was convicted of four bank robberies.
STORY: Praful Patel (Kangana Ranaut) is a 30-year-old divorcee living in Atlanta with her middle-class parents. A housekeeper by profession, her dream is to buy a house of her own but her one bad step shatters that! It happens when Praful goes to Los Angeles with her cousin and loses all her savings and subsequently borrows thousands of dollars from a local goon. She looses the borrowed money as well and is given 10 days by them to return it back with interest. And then begins her journey as a "lipstick bandit" and before you know it, Praful is in a BIG mess!
Kangana Ranaut in a still from the movie 'Simran'
The first half of the movie is engaging and entertaining with some hilarious scenes that will leave you in splits, the second half however looks a bit dragged and filmy, the way Praful goes about robbing banks looks childish, as even after leaving her finger prints all over and notes scribbled with lipstick police is clueless. The media brands her as 'lipstick bandit', while on the other hand Atlanta cops and the victimized bank employees looks clueless and the scene becomes hard to digest as an audience, ignoring these few scenes, the movie is light-hearted and a complete entertainer.
IN PICS: ‘Dangal’ girl Fatima Sana Shaikh looks BEAUTIFUL in her blue suit and long hair at ‘Simran’ movie special screening!
ACTING: Kangana Ranaut as a self-destructive rebel completely owns the movie with such ease and her acting prowess. She plays the role of a Gujarati immigrant girl, who loves to live life on her own terms, explains the difference between good girl and a bad one like you would have never imagined. She buys expensive dresses, knows the difference between cute and decent guy and also refuses to have sex without protection! Her character also has a bad ass tinge that she brilliantly portrays onscreen with such conviction that makes us believe her dedication towards work.
Kangana as Simran
The supporting characters have done also done justice with their respective roles, actor Soham Shah as Kangana's lover looks convincing. Popular Gujarati actor Hiten Kumar as Kangana's on-screen father did a great job as a strict Guju dad and so did her onscreen mom.
Aditya-Kangana controversy: Son Sooraj Pancholi DELETES tweets after requesting to keep him & sister Sana out of it!
DIRECTION: Director Hansal Mehta who has made some brilliant movies like- Aligarh, Citylights and Shahid has once again proved how great as a director he is. Hansal does a splendid job in bringing out Prafull's role onscreen. However when a National Award winning director collaborates with a three-time National Award winning actress, the audience expects something out of the box certainly 'Simran' is not as great as 'Shahid' or 'Aligarh' but definitely an endearing one.
MUSIC: There are a few songs which goes well with the movie. 'Lagdi Hai Thaai', is a peppy number by Guru Randhawa and Jonita Gandhi, Sunidhi Chauhan's 'Pinjra Tod Ke' is my personal favourite.
Overall 'Simran' is a popcorn entertainer which you can definitely watch for the 'hero' Kangana Ranaut's brilliant performance!
