Bollywood filmmakers have been winning at the box office with horror-comedy, a redefined genre. After the success of films like ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’, the franchise was continued with equally engaging sequel. One can surely notice a spike in the release of more films under the genre and ‘Munjya’, starring Sharvari Wagh and Abhay Verma, joins the list.


The film follows a young man who unveils a family secret after visiting his native village and unintentionally bumps into a vengeful spirit. The spirit, Munjya, who wants to get married, clutches on to him and now he must fight to safeguard himself and his love.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa

The psychological horror-comedy film, directed by Priyadarshan, is a remake of the 1993 Malayalam film ‘Manichitrathazhu’. It revolves around a haunted palace, where a series of mysterious happenings compel the family to seek help from a psychiatrist, Dr. Aditya Shrivastav (played by Akshay Kumar). The horror comedy film stars Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, and Shiney Ahuja in pivotal roles. 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa' was both a critical and commercial success, which led to sequels. The second part starred Tabu, Kartik Aaryan, and Kiara Advani. The third installment, which will see the return of Vidya Balan, is still awaited. 


Stree

The film blended folklore with humour and social commentary and starred Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, and Pankaj Tripathi. Set in the small town of Chanderi, it centres on the urban legend of ‘Stree’, a spirit who kidnaps men during a festival. Rajkummar plays a tailor who tries to uncover the mystery behind the folklore. Shraddha Kapoor's film became a major box-office success and has made it a standout film in Indian cinema.


Roohi

The Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao starrer follows a young woman, Roohi, who is possessed by a spirit named Afza. The film combined horror and comedy while addressing societal norms. Rajkummar and Varun Sharma played the roles of two local news reporters who get caught in a supernatural adventure. They try to rescue Roohi from escaping the malevolent spirit.


Bhediya

'Bhediya', starring Varun Dhawan, is inspired by Arunachal Pradesh's legend of a shape-shifting werewolf (Yapum). The supernatural being wants to protect the jungle at any cost. Varun, who plays the role of Bhaskar, reaches the small town for a road-building project. After being bitten by a wolf in the forests, he finds himself changing into a shape-shifting werewolf. The film garnered positive reviews and earned 13 Filmfare Award nominations.


Go Goa Gone

The film, directed by Raj and D.K., is set against the backdrop of a rave party on a secluded island in Goa. A bunch of friends get stuck in a sudden zombie outbreak where Boris, a Russian mafioso (Saif), comes to their rescue. Saif Ali Khan starrer was a groundbreaking film that had a mix of comedy and zombie horror. The film is celebrated as India's first zombie comedy, which was engaging for its satirical take on the zombie apocalypse. It also stars Kunal Khemu, Vir Das, and Anand Tiwari.
