Pakistani Actor Slams Sidharth Malhotra Mission Majnu For 'Misrepresentation' ; Says 'We Don't Wear Skull Caps...'

'Mission Majnu' began streaming on Netflix from January 20, 2023 onwards. The spy-thriller has been directed by Shantanu Bagchi.

New Delhi: Pakistani actor Adnan Siddiqui has criticized Sidharth Malhotra, Rashmika Mandanna starrer 'Mission Majnu' for 'misinterpretation' of Pakistanis in the Bollywood film. Taking to his official Instagram, the actor shared that Bollywood should do some homework and research before making a film. As per Siddiqui, 'there’s so much in Mission Majnu that’s distasteful and factually incorrect'.

Taking to his official social media handle, he wrote, "How much misrepresentation is too much misrepresentation? Bollywood has the answer. I mean come on, yaar (friend) with all the money you have, hire some good researchers to do homework on us."

In the film, Sidharth Malhotra plays the role of an Indian spy in Pakistan in the 70's. The film is allegedly inspired from true events that happened during the time in India and Pakistan.

Adnan also shared a picture of a person doing the thumbs down besides his post which added, "Or allow me to help. Make sure to take notes — no, we don’t wear skull caps, surma (kohl), tawiz (an amulet or locket worn for good luck and protection, common in South Asia); no, we don’t ask janab (sir) about their mijaz (mood); no, we don’t go around throwing adaab (greeting in Urdu)."

"There’s so much in Mission Majnu that’s distasteful and factually incorrect. The hero’s saviour complex would’ve accentuated more if the villain was shown at par. A weak antagonist embellishes even weaker protagonists. Poor story, poorer execution, poorest research. Next time, come and visit us. We are good hosts. Will show you how we look like, dress up and live."His post read.

While many have liked 'Mission Majnu', some have criticized it for its portrayal of the Pakistani culture in a stereotypical way besides also adding some factual errors in the film. When Sidharth was asked about addressing stereotypes of Pakistanis in Bollywood, he told Film Companion, "We have consciously made an effort in the writing that it is never to take on a particular community..."

'Mission Majnu' began streaming on Netflix from January 20, 2023 onwards. The spy-thriller has been directed by Shantanu Bagchi.
