New Delhi: ‘Jallikattu’ is a 2019 Malayalam film based on the short story ‘Maoist’ by S. Hareesh. This action-drama stars Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad and Santhy Balachandran in prominent roles. Helmed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, the plot of the movie revolves around a bull which escapes from the slaughterhouse that creates havoc amongst the villagers. The subplot of the film illustrates unemployed youth, problematic love triangle and others.

It is a proud moment for our country as ‘Jallikattu’ has been nominated from India for the ‘93rd Oscars Awards’. A total of 27 films from India were in the race for nominations for the ‘93rd Academy Awards’ including ‘Shakuntala Devi’, ‘Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl’, ‘Shikara’, ‘Chhappak’, ‘Bhonsle’, ‘Gulabo Sitabo’, ‘Serious Men’, ‘Bulbul’, ‘The Pink Is Sky’ and others. Two Marathi films were also in contention: ‘Bittersweet’ and ‘Disciple’. Till date, only three feature films: ‘Mother India’, ‘Salaam Bombay’ and ‘Lagaan’ has got a nomination in the foreign-language category but none of them won.

This critically acclaimed movie was premiered on September 6, 2019, at the ‘Toronto International Film Festival’. It was also premiered on the ‘24th Busan International Film Festival’. ‘Jallikattu’ was released theatrically in the home state Kerala on October 4, 2019. The director of ‘Jallikattu’ also received the Best Director trophy at the ‘50th International Film Festival of India’.
