New Delhi: DJ and host Nikhil Chinapa recently took to Twitter to clarify that Vivek Agnihotri's 'The Kashmir Files' was not an official contender at the Oscars 2023. Nikhil commented on Vivek Agnihotri's tweet where he shared the poster of 'The Kashmir Fikes' saying that the film was an 'official contender from India at the 95th Oscars'. He had also alleged that Pallavi Joshi, Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumar and Anupam Kher were all 'shortlisted for best actor categories'. However, there has been a lot of confusion regarding shortlists and nominations recently.
Nikhil tweeted Vivek's post and asked, "What is an official ‘contender’?” For those unaware, India's official entry to the Oscars is Pan Nalin's 'Chhello Show' which will be competing under the Best International Feature category if it makes it to the shortlist. As of now, 'Chhello Show' is on the list with 14 other films to make it to the shortlist.
Soon after Nikhil shared his tweet, a user wrote, “Just hallucination by @vivekagnihotri. With this logic all 18 lakh students are official contenders for medical seats.”
Earlier, filmmaker and writer Aseem Chhabra had clarified that 'The Kashmir Files' had only 'qualified' for the Oscars and any film that has a limited run in Los Angeles can qualify. Aseem had tweeted, "Let me make this clear – that filmmaker who is claiming his divisive film has been “shortlisted” for the Oscars is LYING. His film has only qualified for the Oscars. Any film can qualify if it has a limited run in LA.”
He added, “The Oscar shortlist announced on December 21 includes only two Indian films #RRR (in best song category) and #AllThatBreathes (in best documentary category). And also the short doc #TheElephantWhisperers.” Aseem Chhabra also shared that 'Chhello Show' was in the same category.
The official announcement for the Academy Awards nominations will be announced on January 24, 2022. 'The Kashmir Files' has been courting controversy ever since release. Despite being called a 'propaganda' film, 'it has become one of the top-grossing Hindi films of 2022. in India.
