Mumbai: Actor Veera Sathidar, who portrayed the role of Narayan Kamble in the National Award-winning Marathi Film ‘Court’, died during the wee hours of Tuesday at AIIMS Hospital in Nagpur due to infection caused by COVID-19. Veera Sathidar was admitted to the hospital last week for being positive for coronavirus.
‘Court’ director Chaitanya Tamhane told while speaking to ABP News, “I have received news of his death from Corona a while back. I am shocked after hearing this news and it is a little difficult for me to believe it. Sathidar ji was a very good person and I consider myself lucky that I got an opportunity to work with him in ‘Court’.”
Apart from being an actor, the deceased was also a writer, poet, thinker, social activist and journalist. His spent his childhood embraced in a lot of difficulties. Originally hailing from Wardha district, Veera Sathidar's childhood was spent in Joginagar slum in Nagpur. His father worked as a porter, while his mother used to work for wages.
Veera Sathidar was deeply influenced by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s ideology. He wrote many and sang many songs to uplift the Dalits and backward classes. Veera also edited magazines related to Dalit.
Meanwhile, apart from winning the National-Award, ‘Court’ was also sent for an Oscar nomination from India in the foreign language film category.
