New Delhi: Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty’s father Basantakumar Chakraborty left for his heavenly abode on Tuesday (April 22) in Mumbai. He was 95. Basantakumar, who was battling age-related ailments for a long time, passed away due to kidney failure.

Mithun Chakraborty is currently stuck in Bengaluru due to the Coronavirus lockdown. The ‘Disco Dancer’ actor was shooting for a film in Bengaluru when the nationwide lockdown was announced. Hence, he had to stay back. The ‘Kalia’ actor is trying to return to Mumbai to perform his father’s last rites.

Mithun Chakraborty's younger son Namashi Chakraborty, while talking to ABP News, confirmed the death of his grandfather. He didn't divulge further details.

According to our sources, Mithun's elder son Mimoh Chakraborty is currently in Mumbai and he is waiting for his father to return to the city to perform the last rites.

Popular Bengali actress Rituparna Sengupta took to Twitter to offer condolence to Mithun and his family. She tweeted, "My deep condolences on the sudden demise of your father, Mithun Da. Stay strong & may his soul rest in peace forever."


Basantakumar Chakraborty is survived by his wife Santimoyee Chakraborty and children. Mithun, whose real name is Gouranga Chakraborty, is the eldest among the four children.
