Alia Bhatt’s upcoming biographical crime film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, which is all set to hit the theatres on July 30, 2021, has landed into trouble. Questions have been raised in the Maharashtra Assembly regarding this upcoming film.
Congress MLA Amin Patel raised the issue saying that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming film is an attempt to discredit Kamathipura. He further added that attaching ‘Kathaiwadi’ in the title of the film is not right. The MLA has demanded that Kathiawadi’s name should be removed from the title as well as the story of the film should be discussed with the Home Ministry first. It has also been demanded that before the beginning of the film there should be a disclaimer that Kamathipura is not like that in the present days.
Kamathipura is a red-light area in South Mumbai. However, there has been a lot of change in the present days based on the earlier situations.
Meanwhile, Alia Bhatt’s ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ is based on a chapter about Gangubai Kothewali from Hussain Zaidi’s book ‘Mafia Queens Of Mumbai’. Gangubai was the madam of a brothel in Kamathipura. The story revolves around the life is a young girl who was sold into prostitution by her boyfriend and how she emerges as the madam of a brothel.
Other than Alia Bhatt, the upcoming film also stars Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari and Seema Pahwa in supporting roles. Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi and Huma Qureshi will be seen in cameo roles in the movie.
