'Emergency' Makers Move Bombay High Court Seeking Censor Certificate For Kangana Ranaut-Starrer Amids Ban Calls

The makers of 'Emergency', starring Kangana Ranaut, have taken their case to the Bombay High Court in an effort to get the film's certificate from the CBFC.

New Delhi: The much-anticipated biographical political film ‘Emergency’ starring Kangana Ranaut is facing certification issues, therefore the makers have approached the Bombay High Court for help. In order to discuss the matter, the court has set a hearing for Wednesday, September 4. The movie's producers are Zee Entertainment.

Kangana Ranaut starrer, which is set to be released on September 6, is embroiled in controversy due to objections raised by Sikh groups, such as the Shiromani Akali Dal, who claim that it misrepresents the community and gets historical facts incorrect. Alleging that the film tries to "character assassinate" Sikhs via its plot, the Akhal Takht has demanded an immediate ban.

It has been reported by PTI that Zee Entertainment Enterprises has asked the court to force the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to validate the film. While prepared to accept the certification, the CBFC has "illegally and arbitrarily" delayed it, according to the appeal. The case was brought before a division bench of Justices B P Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla, who have consented to speed up the hearing.

Actress Kangana Ranaut, who plays the role of Indira Gandhi, the former prime minister of India in the film, and who also directs and co-produces the film, had previously said that the CBFC had not given its approval. She said, "Many kinds of rumours are being spread that our film 'Emergency' has got a censor certificate. This is not true. In fact, our film had been cleared but its certification has been stopped because a lot of threats are coming to kill those who censor it."
