Fans slammed Cardi B for posing as Goddess Durga on the cover of a magazine to promote her new sneaker collection.
New Delhi: Pop star Cardi B received flak on social media for posing as Hindu Goddess Durga to promote her new sneaker collection. The 28-year-old, who posed for the cover of a leading footwear magazine for its latest issue, stirred controversy as she was seen holding shoes in her hands. Footwear News, which shared the look on their Instagram handle, has taken the post down after major uproar. As per the caption of the post, Cardi B was trying to pay homage to Goddess Durga in a Georges Hobeika gown. "Like Durga, Cardi B is a dominant female voice at a critical time," the caption read.

Although, the post was deleted, netizens were quick enough to slam the WAP rapper. Fans didn't take kindly to Cardi B's look and accused her of cultural appropriation. One user shared a screenshot of Cardi's look on Twitter and expressed his disappointment over the depiction. "People are saying Cardi B is paying homage to our hindu goddess Durga. So as a Hindu I want to say that Durga maa is not to be used as an aesthetic and is NEVER depicted bare bodied," the tweet read.

The international rap sensation took to her Instagram story to issue a statement for hurting the sentiments of the fans. She said that she never intended to 'hurt someone's culture or religion'. Cardi apologized and said that she can't change the past but will be more 'cautious in the future.' "When I did the shoot, the creatives told me I was going to represent a Goddess; that she represents strength, femininity and liberation, and that’s something I love and I’m all about. And though it was dope, if people think I’m offending their culture or their religion I want to say that was not my intent. The musician set several tongues wagging with her decision to get legally separated from her husband Offset after three years of marriage. The estranged couple, who tied the knot in September 2017 in a secret wedding, remained in news for much-publicized issues in their love life.
