Aamir Khan stirred up nostalgia and excitement when he announced on his birthday that a sequel to the beloved cult classic 'Andaz Apna Apna' was in development, with Salman Khan expected to reunite with him on screen. However, fresh statements from the family of late producer Vinay Kumar Sinha have cast doubts over the project’s legitimacy.
In a recent chat with Lehren Retro, Vinay Sinha’s children—Priti Sinha, Amod Sinha, and Namrata Sinha—clarified that no official rights have been granted to either Aamir Khan or director Rajkumar Santoshi to proceed with a sequel.
“Aamir was just an actor, not a producer”
Responding to whether Aamir or Rajkumar Santoshi held any stake in the original film, the Sinha family said, “Aamir was never a producer (of the film), he was just an actor. We will never sell the rights to him or Rajkumar Santoshi.”
While they did not dismiss the idea of a sequel entirely, they underlined that any forward movement on the project must go through them as the rightful producers. “Yes, Aamir said that Rajkumar Santoshi is writing Andaz Apna Apna 2, and we are very excited about it. But I do want to tell you that in our father’s lifetime, for the longest time, Raj ji and Dad kept meeting and talking about a sequel. A contract was also about to happen. It went on for a long time that it was being written. Raj ji kept saying he was writing the sequel, but it never happened. Now, only he can answer why it didn’t happen in my dad’s lifetime. This was all set – that the sequel would be made, we’d produce it, and Rajkumar Santoshi would direct it,” they added.
No director finalised yet
Priti Sinha also revealed that there is no decision yet on whether Rajkumar Santoshi will return to helm the second installment. “We are not sure. We haven’t decided yet. Everyone can say they are writing the film. But if the producers don’t announce the film, then it’s only talk,” she said.
The Sinha family maintained that if the sequel does materialise, they expect to be involved in the production, honouring a commitment Santoshi had reportedly made to their father before his death.
Salman and Aamir supported the re-release
Interestingly, Salman Khan, during the shoot of Ready, had suggested the family re-release Andaz Apna Apna in theatres. Paresh Rawal had also recommended they take to social media to promote the re-release. The family acknowledged both Aamir and Salman’s support in spreading the word, although Rajkumar Santoshi remained absent from the promotions, reportedly due to his engagement with Lahore 1947.
What Aamir had said
For those unaware, Aamir Khan had confirmed a sequel was in the works. He had told the media, “We would all want Andaz Apna Apna 2. We have told Raj ji (director Rajkumar Santoshi) to work on the script. As soon as his script is ready, Salman and I would definitely want to work on it. I think the audience would want to watch Andaz Apna Apna 2… Raj ji is working on the script.”
