Taran Adarsh also shared a picture of Akshay Kumar as a character from the upcoming film.

Previously known as 'Capsule Gill', 'The Great Indian Rescue' is based on the real life story of Raniganj Coalfields wherein 64 miners were trapped in West Bengal. Jaswant Singh, played by Akshay Kumar, saved their lives by risking his own during the 1989 mine collapse. This happened to be  India’s first Coal mine Rescue.  To commemorate the day, November 16 was marked as ‘Rescue Day’.

Born on November 22, 1939, in Amritsar, Gill was a Khalsa College alumni, and was awarded the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak by President Ramaswamy Venkataraman in 1991.

Raniganj coal mine, India's first coal mine, was opened in 1774 after John Sumner and Suetonius Grant Heatly of the British East India Company acquired a license for mining activities. The mine was nationalised in 1974 and was acquired by the Coal Mines Authority of India.

The film will chronicle the same. It stars an ensemble cast including the likes of Rajesh Sharma, Ravi Kishan, Kumud Mishra, Virendra Saxena, Pavan Malhotra and others.

The film, backed by Pooja Entertainment, will be directed by Tinu Suresh Desai who has earlier worked with Akshay Kumar on the National Award-winning film 'Rustom'.

The film was announced on November 16 last year officially on the day marked as 'Resuce Day'. The Union Minister of Coal and Mines-Govt of India Shri Pralhad Joshi commemorated Late Gill on Twitter on November 16. Overwhelmed with the opportunity of playing a real-life hero on the screen, Akshay Kumar took to Twitter replying, “Grateful to you @JoshiPralhad ji, for recalling India’s first coal mine rescue mission – this day 33yrs ago. मेरा सौभाग्य है कि मैं #SardarJaswantSinghGill जी का किरदार अपनी फ़िल्म में निभा रहा हूँ. It’s a story like no other!”

'The Great Indian Rescue' has been written by Deepak Kingrani and Vipul K Rawal and is being directed by Tinu Suresh Desai.

Most of the film is being shot in England.

The movie will now be in theatres on October 5, 2023.
