Mamamoo Star Hwasa Reported To Police Over Alleged ‘Perverted Sexual Act’, Her Agency Responds

Hwasa's performance at the Sungkyunkwan University Festival was the reason for a police complaint filed.

New Delhi: Hwasa, a member of the K-pop girl group MAMAMOO, has been charged with public obscenity during a recent performance. According to a report in the South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo, the Seoul Seongdong Police Station stated on Monday that it had only begun its investigation into claims of indecent performance against Hwasa. Her performance at the Sungkyunkwan University Festival was the reason for a police complaint filed by Student Parents and Human Rights Protection Solidarity. 

"Hwasa's gesture suggested a perverted sexual act and was enough to bring embarrassment and shame to the public who witnessed it. As the gesture doesn't fit the context of the choreography, it can not be interpreted as performance art," the student-parent group claimed, as reported by Koreaboo.

The K-pop star gave a performance as a guest on the tvN show Dancing Queens On The Road at the Sungkyunkwan University Festival. The association alleged she made a provocative gesture during her solo performance of the song 'Don't' which some viewers found offensive. According to a police official, they are looking into the claims and may need to contact Hwasa.

A spokesperson for Hwasa's agency reportedly said in a statement that they are internally looking into the incident to determine whether it is true. Reacting to the incident, the singer's agency said, as per Soompi, “We understand that the police are reviewing the case.”

Previously, a fancam of Hwasa's performance at the Sungkyunkwan University Festival on May 12 went viral and drew diverse reactions from internet users.

Solar, Moonbyul, Wheein, and Hwasa make up the quartet known as MAMAMOO. The band made its debut in 2014 with their first extended play (EP), Hello. In 2022, they released their latest album. In October of last year, they released their 12th EP, Mic On.
