‘House of the Dragon’, an HBO fantasy series, will return to Westeros on June 16 with the start of Season 2, reawakening fan enthusiasm for the Targaryen narrative. This prequel, written by George R.R. Martin and produced by Ryan Condal, examines the complex dynamics of the Targaryen dynasty two centuries before ‘Game of Thrones’. The series is adapted from Fire and Blood, a prequel book by Martin.

The story starts 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen was born and Mad King Aerys died. ‘House of the Dragon’ explores the tumultuous conflicts, treacheries, and blazing feuds that characterise the Targaryen dynasty during King Viserys I Targaryen's ninth year of power. This show, in contrast to ‘Game of Thrones’, is purely concerned with the feuds and power struggles that exist inside the Targaryen family.

To help you remember the first season as you prepare for the second, here are five key moments:

1. The Succession Crisis: The first season sets the stage with King Viserys I Targaryen's controversial decision to name his daughter, Rhaenyra, as his heir, sparking tension and rivalry within the Targaryen family.

2. Daemon Targaryen's Rebellion: Prince Daemon, Viserys' younger brother, emerges as a formidable and unpredictable force. His rebellious actions and thirst for power add layers of complexity to the Targaryen conflict.

3. Rhaenyra's Marriage Alliances: Rhaenyra's strategic marriages play a crucial role in securing her claim to the throne. Her alliances and the resulting offspring are pivotal in the unfolding drama.

4. The Dance of the Dragons: The season culminates in the brewing civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, a brutal conflict that pits Targaryen against Targaryen, threatening to tear the family apart.

5. The Dragonlords' Power Struggle: The powerful dragonlords of House Targaryen and their Dragonriders are central to the series, with their loyalties and rivalries driving much of the plot.

As the next season of ‘House of the Dragon’ approaches, viewers can anticipate more revelations about the Targaryens' mysterious and fascinating past, along with more intrigue and dragonfire.
