In a viral video from the event on his birthday, Shah Rukh, 59, announced, “The good news is that I’m not smoking anymore, guys.” Reflecting on the effects of quitting, the 'Jawan' actor shared his hope for reduced breathlessness, though he noted that he’s still adjusting.
“Mujhe laga tha ki I will not feel so breathless, but abhi bhi feel kar raha hu (I thought I wouldn’t feel breathless after quitting smoking, but I still do),” Shah Rukh admitted, acknowledging the transition process. However, he expressed optimism, adding, “Inshallah, woh bhi theek ho jayega” (By God’s grace, that will also be fine).
The announcement delighted fans, with one commenting, “Best news I’ve heard all day! 😁👍,” while another wrote, “Wow that’s a great news.” Another fan responded, “If true, dua kabul huya.”
In a 2017 interview, King Khan had expressed his desire to quit smoking and drinking to spend more quality time with his youngest son, AbRam. Speaking at the India Today Conclave, he said, “The presence of a little child at the age of 50, it is a good thing. It makes me come alive, it makes me see innocence and love in a different way. Having said that, will I be there to do the same thing that I did with my older kids? Yes, that is a worry. So that keeps you smoking less, drinking less, exercising more. I am planning to give up all (smoking, drinking, etc) and try to be healthier and happier.”
Over the years, Shah Rukh’s smoking habit has drawn comments from other Bollywood actors. In a conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Pradeep Rawat once recalled seeing Shah Rukh smoke multiple cigarettes, saying, “One thing I remember vividly is that I haven’t seen any other actor smoke as much as he did. He would light a cigarette, use it to light another, and then light yet another one. He was a true chain smoker. Nonetheless, his dedication to the film was undeniable.”
