Nayanthara, known for her private nature and reluctance to discuss her personal life, recently shared insights into her journey in the documentary 'Nayanthara—Beyond the Fairytale'. In the film, she confirmed long-standing speculation that she stepped away from the film industry during her peak years at the behest of a romantic partner.
Why Nayanthara quit films?
In 'Nayanthara—Beyond the Fairytale', the actress delves into her past relationships without naming names. Reflecting on her second relationship, she revealed, “It was the man who told me to quit cinema. It wasn’t like I had an option. I was told to leave cinema, and I agreed.”
Reports suggest Nayanthara was romantically involved with Prabhu Deva between 2010 and 2013, during which Prabhu, though married, expressed his intent to divorce his wife, Latha, and marry Nayanthara. Despite the public scrutiny, Nayanthara remained silent about the relationship. Amid these circumstances, she stepped away from acting in 2011 for about two years, even as her career was at its peak.
Nayanthara's return and marriage
According to reports, her relationship with Prabhu Deva ended during her hiatus due to familial and societal pressures faced by the director. Nayanthara made her cinematic comeback in 2013, a decision she credits Nagarjuna for supporting, stating he offered her a film "when everyone thought I was done."
Director Sathyan Anthikkad, who launched Nayanthara in the 2003 hit 'Manassinakkare', shared his perspective in the documentary. “One day, after the two-year break, she just called me. We spoke for about 4-5 hours that day. At some point, you just need someone to listen to. It wasn’t about my advice or anything. She just needed to talk to someone who knew her from the beginning. It defined her when she decided to come back,” he said.
Nayanthara’s return marked a new era of success, with several hit films solidifying her position as a leading star. She eventually transitioned to solo-led projects and made her Bollywood debut with 'Jawan' in 2023. In her personal life, she married filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, with whom she shares twin sons, Uyir and Ulag.
'Nayanthara—Beyond the Fairytale' is currently streaming on Netflix.
