New Delhi: The acclaimed filmmaker Kiran Rao recently discussed facing criticism following her marriage to the Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan in 2005. In a recent interview, she revealed the challenges she encountered due to public scrutiny.

Recalling the past, Kiran Rao disclosed to Sucharita Tyagi how she developed resilience in the face of harsh remarks following her marriage to Aamir Khan. She stated, "I don’t even know what scrutiny I’m under because I don’t even read all this. And I feel like that’s a healthy way to live your life. Because there’ll always be people who find you odd-looking and strange and ask, ‘Aamir Khan ne kis chashmish aurat se shaadi kar li hain’ (Which spectacled woman has Aamir Khan married?)."

Furthermore, Kiran Rao addressed the increased gossip surrounding her post-separation from Aamir Khan, especially given their amicable relationship post-divorce. Reflecting on societal expectations placed on women, she remarked, "Women have been consciously or unconsciously raised to be non-confrontational. Be seen but not heard, that kind of thing. So, it’s important to have these conversations. This film can be a great place to start that.”

Despite their separation in 2021, Kiran and Aamir continue to co-parent their son, Azad. Notably, Kiran participated in Aamir's daughter Ira Khan's wedding festivities, highlighting their mutual respect and friendship.

On the professional front, Kiran's directorial venture, ‘Laapata Ladies’, received critical acclaim upon its release on March 1, 2024, despite underwhelming box office performance. The film is written by Biplab Goswami, Divyanidhi Sharma and Sneha Desai. ‘Laapataa Ladies’ made little over 15 crore rupees throughout its stint in theatres.
