Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta recently admitted that he had misjudged Kangana Ranaut’s film ‘Emergency’ before watching it, only to be pleasantly surprised by her work. He praised her for proving him wrong. Responding to his remarks, Kangana addressed the tendency of industry insiders to prejudge her, urging them to move past their biases.
Kangana Ranaut on Sanjay Gupta's praise
During an interview with India TV, Kangana spoke candidly about Sanjay’s acknowledgment of his preconceived notions. “He admitted in his post that he had already formed an opinion before watching the film. Why do people feel the need to ‘understand’ me when they are clearly failing at it? And he himself has accepted that he was wrong,” she stated.
On industry's preconceived notions about Kangana
The actress-filmmaker questioned why some in the industry only anticipate negative outcomes for her. “Why carry such negativity? Wishing for someone to fail—how do you even know what I am capable of? Do you have the intellect to comprehend me? To analyze a person from a broad perspective, you need an expanded vision. What qualifies you to assess my intelligence? What kind of films do you make?” she added, making a pointed remark.
Kangana further urged industry members to stop underestimating her, given the kind of content they produce. “I want filmmakers in this industry to refrain from forming preconceived notions about me. If they stop assuming they ‘know’ my limitations, they wouldn’t have to deal with this level of embarrassment,” she remarked.
Sanjay Gupta praises Emergency
Sanjay Gupta had earlier taken to social media to appreciate Kangana’s work, admitting that he hadn’t planned to watch Emergency due to his own biases. “Today, I watched Emergency by @KanganaTeam. Honestly, I wasn’t planning to because I had already prejudged it. I’m so glad I was wrong. What a fantastic film by Kangana—both in terms of performance and direction. Top-notch & world-class,” he wrote.
Kangana's response
Kangana responded to his praise but also pointed out the industry’s reluctance to recognize her talent without bias. “The film industry must rise above its hate and prejudices and acknowledge good work. Thanks for breaking that barrier, Sanjay ji—the barrier of preconceived notions. My message to all filmi intellectuals—never keep any notions about me. Mujhe samajhne ki koshish bhi mat karna, main pahunch se bahar hoon (Don’t try to figure me out, I am out of your reach),” she wrote.
