Diljit Dosanjh Says His Parents Sent Him To City When He Was 11: 'My Connection With Them Broke'

Singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh, who is busy promoting his upcoming film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, recently opened up about his childhood and his bond with his parents.

New Delhi: Singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh, who is busy promoting his upcoming film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, recently opened up about his childhood and his bond with his parents. Diljit revealed that his parents made the decision to send him away to Ludhiana to live with a relative, a move that left him feeling disconnected from his family.

Speaking candidly in a conversation with Ranveer Allahabadia, Diljit said, “I was eleven years old when I left my home and started living with my mamaji (maternal uncle). I came to the city leaving my village behind. I shifted to Ludhiana. He said ‘send him to the city with me’ and my parents said ‘yes, take him.’ My parents did not even ask me.” 

Recalling his time in Ludhiana, Diljit said. “I used to stay alone in a small room. I used to just go to school and come back, there wasn’t any TV. I had a lot of time. Also, we didn’t have mobile phones back then, even if I had to call home or receive a call from my parents, it cost us money. So I started becoming distant from my family.” 

Despite the hardships he faced, Diljit acknowledged his parents' intentions, recognising their desire for a better future for him. “I respect my mother a lot. My father is a very sweet person. He did not ask me anything. He did not even ask which school I studied. But my connection with them broke. Not just with them, with everyone,” he said on the podcast.

The actor also spoke about his upcoming film 'Amar Singh Chamkila' and shared details about the emotional experience of filming the Punjabi folk singer’s death scene. 

Talking about feeling late Punjabi singer Chamkila's energy on the set, Diljit narrated an incident, "We shot exactly at the place where Chamkila was killed. Imtiaz Sir shot exactly at the same place where he fell after being killed. While shooting the scene, As I fell, Tumbi (musical instrument) was in my hand, and its string struck my finger. While I was falling, I could see my hand and the blood falling on the floor. I could sense this is the exact spot where Chamkila’s blood was spilled.”
