Filmmaker Atlee, who recently appeared on 'The Great Indian Kapil Sharma Show', is at the center of a controversy following a comment made by comedian Kapil Sharma. During the appearance, intended to promote his upcoming film 'Baby John', Atlee and his co-stars Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh, and Wamiqa Gabbi joined Kapil for the grand finale episode. However, a joke made by Kapil has drawn criticism, particularly over accusations that it was a derogatory remark about Atlee’s appearance.
What Kapil Sharma said to Atlee
While discussing Atlee’s first encounter with stars, Kapil made a comment that some viewers found inappropriate. He asked, “When you get to meet a star for the first time, do they ask, where is Atlee?” This seemingly light-hearted remark, which Kapil intended to be humorous, sparked a wave of backlash on social media, with many interpreting it as a comment on Atlee’s physical appearance.
What Atlee replied
In response, Atlee calmly addressed the question. “In a way, I understood your question. I’ll try to answer. I’m actually very thankful to AR Murugadoss sir because he produced my first film. He asked for a script, but he didn’t see how I was looking or whether I’m capable of it or not. But, he loved my narration. I think the world should see that. We should not judge by appearance. You have to judge by your heart,” Atlee replied.
Chinmayi Sripaada reacts
The clip of this exchange quickly made its way to social media, where it triggered a heated discussion.
Singer Chinmayi Sripaada, known for her outspoken nature, was quick to criticise Kapil’s joke. Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), she voiced her disapproval, condemning the comedian for his alleged derogatory comment about Atlee's skin color. She wrote, "Will they never stop these crass and racist jibes at his skin color in the name of ‘comedy’? Someone with the amount of influence and clout like Kapil Sharma saying something like this is disappointing and unfortunately, not surprising."
