Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman shared an emotional note on X (formerly Twitter) after announcing his separation from wife Saira Banu, following nearly three decades of marriage. In his post on Wednesday, the musician expressed that "they had hoped to reach the grand thirty." Referring to this phase as a "fragile chapter," he added, "in this shattering, we seek meaning."
AR Rahman’s heartfelt note on separation
Rahman wrote, "We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter (bouquet emoji)." He also included the hashtag ARR Sairaa Breakup.
Khatija and Ameen request privacy
Their daughter, Khatija Rahman, took to Instagram Stories, saying, "I would greatly appreciate it if this matter could be treated with the utmost privacy and respect. Thank you for your consideration."
Similarly, AR Rahman and Saira’s son, Ameen, shared on Instagram Stories, "We kindly request everyone to respect our privacy during this time. Thank you for your understanding."
About AR Rahman and Saira’s separation
Married in 1995, Rahman and Saira share three children—Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen. In a statement released on behalf of the couple, lawyer Vandana Shah explained their decision to separate: "After many years of marriage, Saira and her husband, AR Rahman, have made the difficult decision to separate from each other. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time."
Saira Banu first announced the separation in an individual statement, which was followed by the joint announcement.
