New Delhi: Nearly three months have passed since violence broke out in Manipur. There has been widespread indignation in response to a recent viral video showing women being paraded nude and supposedly being gang-raped. The incident allegedly took place on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, a day after rioting erupted in the northeast state. Bollywood actors have joined the online protests, with Akshay Kumar, Richa Chada, and Renuka Sahane being some of the first to voice their opinion on the lawlessness in the northeastern state.

On Twitter, Akshay expressed his disbelief and disgust after witnessing the graphic footage showing brutality against women in Manipur. On Thursday, the actor tweeted, “Shaken, disgusted to see the video of violence against women in Manipur. I hope the culprits get such a harsh punishment that no one ever thinks of doing a horrifying thing like this again.”

The actor's post received a range of reactions from his supporters. Many people respected him for speaking out against the gruesome act.

Actress Richa Chadha sent a Tweet about the video in which she expressed very similar feelings. She wrote, “Shameful! Horrific! Lawless!”

Manipur’s chief minister, N Biren Singh, called it a "crime against humanity" and demanded an immediate investigation.

Since May 3, there have been racial fights between the Meiteis, who live mostly in the Imphal valley, and the Kukis, who live in the hills. So far, the bloodshed has killed more than 160 people.

In the meanwhile, Akshay Kumar's new movie ‘OMG 2’ will be released in theatres next month. This follow-up to his own critically acclaimed 2012 film has him as Lord Shiva. Directed by Amit Rai, the film feature Pankaj Tripathi, Yami Gautam, and Arun Govil. ‘OMG 2’ premiere date is set for August 11.
