Bengaluru: A teary-eyed and emotionally overwhelmed, DK Shivakumar, as the Karnataka Congress president, displayed a rare vulnerable side Saturday following his party's resounding victory in the state elections. Shivakumar, a prominent Vokkaliga leader, was a strong contender for the chief minister's post. After long parleys with him and Siddaramaiah, the former CM and strongest contender for the post, the Congress high command decided to opt with the latter. Though it was reported that Shivakumar, who had made his chief ministerial ambitions clear, would not initially budge from his stand and even said he would just remain an MLA with no post if he was not made the CM, it is understood that the central leadership managed to convince him to accept the deputy chief minister post.

However, CM or no CM, Shivakumar has proven himself as a combative force within the Congress party, especially in Karnataka, emerging as a troubleshooter during critical junctures.

Hailing from Kanakapura, a small town in Karnataka, the 62-year-old Shivakumar has devoted over 35 years to the Congress party, gradually climbing the political ladder from humble beginnings. He has served as a legislator in the Karnataka Assembly since 1989, establishing an unbroken record of longevity and earning the reputation of an indefatigable leader.

Shivakumar's leadership skills and strategic acumen have been instrumental in positioning the Congress party back in power, reclaiming the state from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after their four-year rule. Known for his maverick organisational abilities, Shivakumar's efforts have played a crucial role in the party's historic victory, securing a clear and stable majority with 135 seats.

With a Master's degree in political science from the Karnataka State Open University, Shivakumar possesses deep insights into the roots of politics, which have aided him in building his clout as a tenacious fighter. Having worked closely with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, he has earned their trust and stands in close proximity to the party's patriarchal family.

Hurdles Shivakumar Faced Before CM Post

Shivakumar's political journey has not been without controversy. He has faced numerous challenges, including the infamous Operation Kamala led by the BJP in 2019. Despite the hurdles, he has consistently demonstrated his ability to rally support, gather resources, and make the Congress party a formidable force in Karnataka. His remarkable electoral victories, such as defeating former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda in the 2004 Lok Sabha election by fielding a woman reporter, Tejashwini Gowda, as his rival, have showcased his electioneering prowess and strategic acumen.

However, Shivakumar always faced a major obstacle in former CM Siddaramaiah, a senior leader and mass figure in Karnataka politics, as far as the chief minister post is concerned. Siddaramaiah's experience and mass appeal posed a significant challenge to Shivakumar's aspiration of becoming the CM. Yet, many believe his unparalleled ability to mobilise money, muscle power, and support from various castes and groups makes him a unique leader without whom the Congress could not succeed in the state.

Notably, Shivakumar has faced legal battles, including encounters with investigative agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax department. He faced lengthy interrogations and even spent time in Tihar Jail. In fact, he is currently out on bail. However, it is his ability to face adversity head-on that has demoralised his detractors and strengthened his position among his supporters.

Beyond politics, Shivakumar, the third richest candidate in the 2023 Karnataka elections, is known to have established several schools, colleges, and professional institutions in important locations across Bangalore.

As the Karnataka Congress chief, Shivakumar has proven himself as a seasoned and tough leader, capable of effectively engaging with opponents and critics. He possesses exceptional patience and a willingness to learn, listening attentively to different perspectives. Furthermore, he maintains friendly and respectful relations with senior leaders from all parties, fostering a sense of camaraderie.

It is now to be seen how Shivakumar, a valiant politician who has emerged as the tallest Vokkaliga leader within the Karnataka Congress, performs as a deputy CM and what portfolios he gets. All eyes will be on his relationship and partnership with CM Siddaramaiah, how they govern the state together and how the party fares under their leadership in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
