Kolkata: With Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) returning to power with absolute majority for a third term, violence allegedly broke out in several places across West Bengal on Sunday.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader B.L. Santhosh lambasted the ruling party in the state over the violent incidents stating it’s a “sign of things to come with possible” TMC victory in the state.
He claimed that houses were attacked and offices burnt besides the women workers being beaten up following the violence in Arambagh, Bishnupur, Entally, Howrah and Bolpur.
The TMC has, however, rubbished the charges.
This comes as the BJP despite an aggressive campaigning by Prime Minister, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several other party stalwarts failed to establish its political foothold in the TMC-ruled state.
Despite a stiff challenge from the BJP, the TMC retained West Bengal and is racing way ahead in the projections so far. The TMC is ahead on 219 seats while the BJP is at a far distant leading in just 77 seats.
The TMC workers indulged in celebrations following the results in the party’s favour despite a ban by the Election Commission of India on victory processions.
