New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday trained guns at former Congress president Rahul Gandhi over the latter's identity which he termed as being "suspicious".

The BJP leader said Rahul should be reminded that his great-grandfather, India's first prime minister Pdt. Jawaharlal Nehru called himself "Accidental Hindu".

Addressing a gathering in Uttarakhand's Kotdwar, UP CM Yogi Adityanath said: "Someone whose identity is suspicious is now defining 'Hindu'. Surprised to hear Rahul Gandhi say the definition of Hindu. He should be told that his great-grandfather called himself 'Accidental Hindu'. Doesn't suit someone, whose ancestors weren't proud of being Hindus, to tell us its definition.."

Adityanath also claimed that the Gandhi family "looks down upon people of UP".

"Uttar Pradesh sent four members of the (Gandhi) family to parliament. But when the siblings go to Kerala, they criticise UP and look down upon people of UP. When they go out of India, they raise their fingers at the country. They don't believe in the people of India," he said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister is campaigning for the ruling BJP in poll-bound Uttarakhand.

Criminals And Goons Will Enter Uttarakhand: Adityanath

Earlier in the day, he addressed a really in Tehri where he alleged that Congress has always opposed the construction of the Ram Mandir and said that there is a competition within the Congress to insult "Hindu".

"There's a competition in Congress to insult 'Hindu'. People who don't know if they are Hindu or not are now defining the meaning of it. Swami Vivekanand said, feel proud to call yourself Hindu. 'Hindu' isn't a communal word, it's our cultural identity," Adityanath said.

He also targetted Congress over the construction of Ram Mandir, claiming it could have been ensured in 1947 but this was never on the party's agenda.

"Congress could have done the construction of the Ram Mandir in 1947 but this was never on their agenda. Congress party is a living example of insult of faith in India. They have always done the work of opposing the construction of the Ram Mandir," he added, as quoted by ANI.

The UP Chief Minister emphasised that Uttar Pradesh is the safest state in the country today and he wants to Uttarkhand become as safe as Uttar Pradesh.

"I fear, the criminals and goons will enter Uttarakhand. We have to make Uttarakhand as safe as UP. BJP does not compromise when it comes to the safety and security of the country," he added.

Meanwhile, Aditayanath also targetted Congress over the party's manifesto saying, "I have seen the manifesto of Congress, they want to make a Muslim University in the state."

Pitching for the BJP government in Uttarakhand, he said: "Uttarakhand government has always worked for the tourism and I believe there is huge employment due to the rich culture and heritage of this state."

The polling for Uttarakhand Assembly Election will take place in a single phase on February 14. The counting of votes will take place on March 10.
