The results for the UP urban body polls and bypolls held in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Odisha and Meghalaya will be declared today. While the voting percentage in the first phase of UP local body elections, conducted in 37 districts on May 4, was 52 per cent, the voter turnout after the final phase on Thursday was recorded at 53 per cent. The bypolls were conducted for two Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, one each in Meghalaya and Odisha and the Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency in Punjab. A voter turnout of 50.27 per cent was recorded in Jalandhar, while the Suar and Chhanbey Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh registered a polling percentage of 41.78 and 39.51 respectively. The Jharsuguda Assembly segment in Odisha witnessed 68.12 per cent polling while the Sohiong Assembly seat in Meghalaya recorded a voter turnout of 91.56 per cent.

According to the State Election Commission (SEC), Varanasi recorded a polling percentage of 38.89, Lucknow 35.42 and Prayagraj 30.32. A polling percentage of 52.59 was recorded in the first phase of the 2017 urban local body elections. UP CM Yogi Adityanath had termed the polls as "Dev-Asur Sangram (battle between deities and demons)." On the last day of campaigning, without naming anyone, the chief minister appeared to invoke nature as a great leveller - a force that delivers justice.

Notably, the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat fell vacant following the death of Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary due to a cardiac arrest during the party's Bharat Jodo Yatra in January. It witnessed a four-cornered electoral battle involving the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

The UP municipal elections were held for 17 seats of Mayor, 1,420 of Corporator, 199 of Nagar Palika Parishad Chairperson, 5,327 of Nagar Palika Parishad Member, 544 of Nagar Panchayat Chairperson, and 7,178 seats of Nagar Panchayat Member.
