Kairana (Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha election): Security personnel stationed at a polling booth in Kairana’s Rasoopur village had to resort to air firing after some miscreants forcefully tried to enter the booth premises and hurled stones at them. Visuals showed a group of men getting into a physical altercation with security officers at a polling station in Rasoolpur village during the first phase of Lok Sabha elections on Thursday. As they were prohibited from entering for not possessing ID cards, some of them started hurling stones at the personnel.

To disperse them, jawans of the Border Security Force fired shots in the air following which the situation was brought under control.

It is still not known whether the miscreants were affiliated to any political party.

Reports say security was beefed up at the polling booth after the incident was brought to the notice of district authorities.

For the BJP, the Kairana parliamentary constituency holds immense significance as it had tasted defeat in the Lok Sabha by-election last year.

In the 2014 parliamentary elections, the BJP had won all the eight seats-- Saharanpur, Kairana, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar.

BJP has fielded Pradeep Chaudhary, a Gujjar. While Tabassum Hasan is contesting on a Samajwadi Pary/mahagathbandhan ticket. Congress has put forward Jat candidate Harenda Malik in a bid to cut BJP’s votes.

Speaking about the incident, Suresh Rana, minister of state for sugarcane development and sugar mills, said "some people have a habit of bogus voting as they don’t believe in democracy." He hoped the district administration will take stringent action against such culprits.
