Kamal Haasan's MNM Joins DMK-Led Alliance, Gets One Seat For Rajya Sabha Polls 2025

Earlier, Kamal Haasan emphasised that Makkal Needhi Maiam would support any bloc that prioritises the nation selflessly.

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan-led Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) officially joined the DMK alliance on Saturday. After a seat-sharing agreement, MNM was also allotted one Rajya Sabha seat for 2025. 

This is the first time Kamal Haasan's MNM has entered an alliance with the DMK.

Addressing the reporters, Kamal said he would campaign for the victory of DMK alliance in Tamil Nadu with the common goal of defeating BJP. MNM chief told ANI, "My party and I are not contesting this election. But we will give all cooperation to this alliance. We have joined hands as this is not just for a position, this is for the nation."

Earlier, Kamal Haasan mentioned that discussions were underway for his party MNM's political alliance. He emphasized that MNM would support any bloc that prioritises the nation selflessly but would refrain from participating in "feudal politics."

On the seventh anniversary of Makkal Needhi Maiam's (MNM) inception, Kamal Haasan addressed queries regarding his dedication to politics, emphasising the importance of citizen engagement in the democratic process, particularly through voting. He highlighted the challenges of maintaining integrity in politics while reaffirming his steadfast dedication to serving the people.

In 2018, Kamal Haasan launched Makkal Needhi Maiam at a grand founding function in Madurai. The event was attended by prominent members including Delhi CM Aravind Kejriwal. 

"Makkal Needhi Maiam" can be roughly translated to "Centre for People's Justice."

At the event, Kamal Haasan also unfurled his party's flag, featuring six hands denoting five states and a union territory in the South of India. Set against a white background, the flag displayed six hands united, with three hands shaded in red and the others in white, centered around a star encircled by a star-like pattern in black.

The colors black and white hold significant political meaning in Tamil Nadu, representing the flags of the state's two major parties, AIADMK and DMK. These shades are also viewed as symbols of Dravidian ideology.
