The Congress party on Friday disclosed its initial list of 39 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, encompassing states such as Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, Telangana, and Tripura. Among the 39 candidates announced, 15 belong to the general caste, while 24 hail from SC/ST/minorities.

Following the candidates' revelation, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal told reporters, "Our priority is to win the maximum Lok Sabha seats to defeat PM Modi in the next elections. Our target is to win the maximum number of parliament seats for the Congress party".

The names of the Lok Sabha election candidates were finalised during the Congress party's Central Election Committee meeting in New Delhi on Thursday. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chief Sonia Gandhi, and General Secretary KC Venugopal attended the meeting, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi participating via Zoom.

The suspense regarding Rahul Gandhi's potential candidacy for a second seat from Uttar Pradesh's Amethi remains. The Congress party has clarified that discussions about candidates in the remaining states will occur in upcoming meetings.

The second Election Committee meeting is scheduled for March 11, where the Congress will deliberate on the names of candidates for the remaining states in the impending Lok Sabha polls.
