All India Congress Committee on Tuesday approved the candidature of Sher Singh Ghubaya to contest Lok Sabha elections from Punjab's Firozpur parliamentary constituency. Singh's candidature was approved by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. 





 "The CEC has approved the candidature of Shri Sher Singh Ghubaya as Congress candidate to contest the ensuing general elections to the Lok Sabha from 10-Ferozepur Parliamentary constituency of Punjab," the AICC press release stated.


The former MP had resigned from the Shiromani Akali Dal in 2019 after which he joined Congress in the presence of former party president Rahul Gandhi. At that time, he was the second MP of National Democratic Alliance to join the grand old party.

Firozpur Lok Sabha constituency had been a Shiromani Akali Dal bastion for 25 years, and Singh who was the two time MP from the seat in 2009 and 2014, has a dominant vote bank in the constituency which comprises of Rai Sikh community.


In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, SAD's Sukhbir Singh Badal won from the Firozpur constituency defeating INC's Sher Singh Ghubaya, who lost with 4,34,577 votes. 


In Punjab, voting for its 13 seats will be conducted in a single phase during the seventh and final phase, which is slated to be held on June 1. These 13 seats include Amritsar, Ludhiana, Firozpur, Nandpur Sahib, Khadoor Sahib, Fatehgarh Sahib, Jalandhar, Sangrur, Patiala, Faridkot, Nandpur, Gurdaspur, and Bhatinda.


On Tuesday, the polling is currenlty going on for the third phase of the Lok Sabha polling for 93 Lok Sabha seats across 12 states and one union territory.
