With the Lok Sabha elections inching closer with each passing day, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) accorded the Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar with 'Z' category CRPF security cover across the country. The decision came in amidst heightened tensions due to the ongoing political landscape ahead of the upcoming Lok sabha polls.

The Z-category vip Security cover of armed commandos was provided by the Union government in view of potential threats, news agency PTI reported on Tuesday citing official sources.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has entrusted the responsibility for the task to the Central Reserve Police Force. CRPF has been directed to provide a contingent of about 40-45 personnel for the task, the report added.

The decision was made on the basis of a threat perception report prepared by central security agencies, recommending a strong cover for Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kumar. "The armed commandos will accompany the CEC during his travels across the country," PTI quoted its sources as saying.

Rajiv Kumar is a retired IAS officer of the 1984 batch. He took charge as the 25th Chief Election Commissioner on May 15 and was appointed as an election commissioner in the poll body in September 1, 2020.

CEC Rajiv Kumar had announced the schedule for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on March 16. Additionally, the Election Commission also announced schedule for the Assembly elections in four states including Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Sikkim.
