NEW DELHI: Gujarat, the home state of PM Narendra Modi, will vote in a single phase on April 23. The state has 26 Lok Sabha seats and all of them were won by the BJP in 2014. This year, elections will be held in a single phase where over 4.47 crore electors are eligible to cast their votes for 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat. In the state, votes will be cast across 51,709 booths and of these 4,47,464,179 voters, 2,32,56,688 are men and 2,14,88,437 women.

In the state which is considered to be a bastion for the BJP, during the 2014 general elections the party had won all 26 seats in the state. 24 of its candidates won by margins of one lakh-plus votes. The main opposition party Congress had failed to win any of the 26 seats in Gujarat while BJP clocked nearly 60 per cent votes. The 24 seats which went to BJP include Narendra Modi's Vadodara and LK Advani's Gandhinagar Lok Sabha seats. Leading the list in terms of the victory margin was none other than the country's prime minister-in-waiting Modi who defeated Congress's Madhusudan Mistry by 5,70,128 votes in Vadodara.

The only two seats where the margin was less than one lakh votes for BJP were Anand and Sabarkantha. BJP's Dilip Patel polled 4,90,829 votes against Bharat Solanki of Congress, who has been holding the Anand seat for two terms but lost this time by a margin of 63,426 votes. In Sabarkantha, former Union minister for textiles Shankarsinh Waghela of Congress was defeated by a margin of 84,455 votes by BJP's Dipsinh Rathod. The voter turnout in Gujarat was 62.4%.

Elections to the 15th Lok Sabha were held on 30th April, 2009 in Gujarat State and counting for this election was completed on 16th May, 2009. The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) won 15 seats and the Indian National Congress won 11 seats.

In 2004 Lok Sabha election, the result was a victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which won 14 seats. The remaining 12 seats were won by Indian National Congress (INC).

This year, the notification for the election will be issued on March 28 and candidates can fill nomination forms between March 28 and April 4. Scrutiny of nomination forms will be held on April 5, and candidates can withdraw their nomination forms by April 8, he said, adding that the model of conduct had now come into force.

The voters can use toll-free number 1950 to get information regarding polls, voting, and also to register violations of the model code of conduct. A mobile application called Voter Helpline has also been launched to act as a single point of service and delivery to voters.
