Gujarat Election: Congress Tried To Defeat Tribal Woman Nominated By Us For President's Post, Says PM Modi In Dahod

Gujarat Election 2022: PM Modi said the "Congress model" meant casteism, division, and vote bank politics which has "ruined" Gujarat and the entire country.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched an attack on Congress and said the grand old party tried to defeat a tribal woman (Droupadi Murmu) nominated by us for President's post by fielding a candidate, reported news agency PTI. After addressing the first rally in Mehsana, PM Modi addressed the public in Dahod in Central Gujarat.

On July 21, NDA's presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu clinched the country’s highest constitutional post after defeating her rival and joint opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha. Droupadi Murmu’s ascent as the 15th elected President of India makes her the first tribal and the second woman after Pratibha Devisingh Patil to hold the coveted post.

On the first day of his trip, PM Modi said the "Congress model" meant casteism, division, and vote bank politics which has "ruined" Gujarat and the entire country.

"This model has ruined not just Gujarat but also India. This is the reason why we have to try hard today to take the country ahead. We (BJP) have never endorsed such a policy of favouritism and discrimination. That is the reason youths are reposing their trust in us," the prime minister said. Earlier in the day, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi targeted the ruling party after 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' led by him entered Madhya Pradesh and alleged the BJP "first spreads fear in the minds of youth, farmers, and labourers and when it sets in, they convert it into violence".

"They (Congress) always wanted to keep people poor so they remain dependent on government," the prime minister said while addressing a rally in the north Gujarat town.

He said youngsters are confident that BJP's policies will create more opportunities for them in the future.

The election battle ground for Gujarat is witnessing a three-cornered battle this time with AAP trying to make in-roads in the state. Polling will be held in two phases in the state on December 1 and 5 while counting of votes will be done on December 8.
