AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Wednesday announced that his party will contest in the upcoming Karnataka election. He also declared D Anbarasan as the candidate from the state's Pulikeshi Nagar constituency.
Earlier it was reported that the AIADMK will not contest the Karnataka Assembly polls and would instead support the BJP. News agency IANS reported that in its executive meeting on Sunday, the party decided not to contest the May 10 Karnataka Assembly elections and support the BJP instead.
It was the first executive meeting, since K. Palaniswami was elected as the party's General Secretary, was chaired by party Presidium Chairman Thamizhmagan Hussain.
IANS reported citing a source that despite contention between AIADMK and BJP Tamil Nadu President K. Annamalai, the saffron party had requested AIADMK to extend its support in the Karnataka elections.
According to IANS, a total of 15 resolutions were passed in the executive meeting of which 10 were against the ruling DMK, including one condemning it for the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. It mentioned that one resolution was passed to authorise Palaniswami to lead the party in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Congress's Candidates
The Congress party on Tuesday released the fourth list of 7 candidates for the upcoming for Karnataka Assembly elections. Jagdish Shettar, former Karnataka CM received a ticket from Hubli-Dharwad-Central.
The Congress party on Saturday released the third list of 43 candidates for the upcoming elections. The party has fielded former deputy CM of the state Laxman Savadi from the Athani constituency. Kolar seat has been given to Kothur G Manjunath. This comes a day after Congress lashed out at the BJP accusing the party of not treating its leaders in the right way. While talking to the media, former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah said that BJP should not have treated Savadi like this by denying him a ticket at all despite the fact that he's a senior leader in the party.
"Laxman Savadi was denied a ticket (by the BJP). Since he is a senior leader, BJP shouldn't have treated him like this. The only condition Savadi has made (to Congress) is that he should be treated properly with all due respect," he added.
Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar also stressed the same adding that 'Laxman Savadi was humiliated by the BJP'. He said, "He (Laxman Savadi) feels that he has been humiliated (by the BJP). It is our duty to take such great leaders into Congress. Around 9-10 sitting legislators want to join us but we don't have space to accommodate them."
Karnataka will go to polls on May 10 while the counting of votes will take place on May 13.
