The Bhadaur assembly is a reserved seat, and has an estimated Scheduled Caste population of 31.69 percent. Satnam Singh Rahi was representing Shiromani Akali Dal on this seat

This was the first time that Channi contested from the seat. Since being elected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly in 2007 from the Chamkaur Sahib seat Channi never contested an election from any other place.

Besides him, Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu on Thursday lost from the Amritsar East assembly seat against AAP's Jeevan Jyot Kaur.

Channi has served as a minister in the Captain Amarinder Singh government. He was also the Leader of Opposition in the state assembly from 2015 to 2016.
