Amritsar East Assembly Election Result 2022: Navjot Singh Sidhu Loses Seat To AAP’s Jeevan Jyot Kaur

Sidhu had dared Majithia to contest from Amritsar East, after which SAD President Sukhbir Badal announced to field Majithia from the constituency.

Punjab Assembly Election Result 2022: Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu on Thursday lost from the Amritsar East assembly seat by a margin of 6,750 votes against AAP’s Jeevan Jyot Kaur.

Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia and BJP's Jagmohan Singh Raju were also in the fray.

In a surprise development, AAP’s Jeevan Jyot Kaur emerged victorious on the seat where the main contest was believed to be between Navjot Singh Sidhu and Bikram Singh Majithia.

Sidhu had dared Majithia to contest from Amritsar East, after which SAD President Sukhbir Badal announced to field Majithia from the constituency.

In the 2017 Punjab elections, Sidhu had won the assembly seat beating BJP leader Rajesh Kumar Honey by a margin of more than 42,800 votes.

Winning the Amritsar East seat had become a matter of prestige for Sidhu after being snubbed by the Congress for the chief ministerial nomination.

Today, the early trends indicated that the ruling Congress has been decimated in Punjab while the SAD, which contested the polls in alliance with the BSP, has failed to make much impact.

Among those who were trailing in early trends included Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. Channi is trailing from his seat Chamakur Sahib, from where he is sitting MLA as well as Bhadaur, the second seat from where he had entered the fray.

Former Chief Ministers Parkash Singh Badal, Amarinder Singh, and Rajinder Kaur Bhattal were also trailing, early trends showed.

SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal was also behind his nearest rival and AAP candidate Jagdeep Kamboj in his Jalalabad seat.

Election for the 117 member Punjab assembly was held in a single phase on February 20. The Election Commission had initially announced February 14 as the polling date, but it was rescheduled after demand by political parties seeking change in view of Guru Ravi Das Jayanti, on February 16.
