In the 2017 Himachal assembly election, BJP wrested power from the Congress government and formed the government after winning 44 seats, a comfortable margin away from the state majority mark of 35. Congress was able to win only 21 seats, while the CPI(M) grabbed 2 and 'others' bagged 1 assembly seat in Himachal Pradesh.

In the 2012 Himachal Pradesh assembly election, under the leadership of Virbhadra Singh, Congress was able to return to power in the hill state. The Congress gained a simple majority (36 assembly seats) on their tumultuous road to victory. The BJP was able to get only 26 assembly seats and 'others' bagged six.

In the 68-member Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, the magic number to cross is 35. As per ABP-CVoter Opinion Polls conducted ahead of the voting in the hill state, Congress closed the gap with BJP and the projected seat tally of both was hovering around the majority mark.


ABP-CVoter Himachal Opinion Poll on November 9 suggested that it could be a hung assembly, as BJP was getting between 31 and 39 seats and the Congress swayed between 29 and 37 seats.

The trend continued even in the October 14 ABP-CVoter opinion poll, with Congress projected to get 20-28 assembly seats and the BJP gaining somewhere between 38 and 46 seats in the Legislative Assembly.
