Background

Howrah: In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Prasun Banerjee from All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won the elections by a margin of 196956 votes. The polling / voting in Howrah constituency in the 2019 General elections took place in Phase 5 on 6 May. The major contest is between Bharatiya Janata Party#s Rantidev Sen Gupta and All India Trinamool Congress#s Prasun Banerjee

Howrah 2014 Lok Sabha Polls

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, All India Trinamool Congress won 34 out of the 42 parliamentary seat with 39.8 percent vote share while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) managed to win just 2 seats with a 23 percent vote share.

The total voter turnout was 74.77% Lok Sabha percent with 77.47% Lok Sabha percent male voters turning out to cast their votes. Meanwhile, 71.69% Lok Sabha percent of the women voters cast their votes and 9929 Lok Sabha voters pressed on the NOTA

Out of the 15 Lok Sabha candidates who contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Howrah, 12 had to deposit their security. The voters gave their mandate in favour of Prasun Banerjee of the All India Trinamool Congress as he defeated Sridip Bhattacharya by a margin of 196956 votes.

  • 2004 Lok Sabha Elections: In 14th Lok Sabha election, Communist Party of India candidate defated All India Trinamool Congress candidate in one-sided contest. Here, CPM candidate Swadesh Chakrabortty attained 489444 votes and AITC's Dr. Bikram Sarkar bagged 242507 votes.
  • 1999 Lok Sabha Elections: In 13th Lok Sabha poll, Communist Party of India candidate defated All India Trinamool Congress candidate in one-sided contest. Here, CPM candidate Swadesh Chakraborty attained 490537 votes and AITC's Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar bagged 387088 votes.
  • 1998 Lok Sabha Elections: In 12th Lok Sabha election, interesting battle could be seen between WBTC and Communist Party of India here WBTC candidate defeated his Communist Party of India counterpart with a difference of 6535 votes.
  • 1996 Lok Sabha Elections: In 11th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated Communist Party of India candidate with a difference of 33931 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Priya Ranjan Das Munsi attained 459059 votes and Communist Party of India candidate Susanta Chakraborty bagged 425128 votes

  • 1967 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fourth Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated CPM candidate with a difference of 42294 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader K. K. Chatterjee attained 176469 votes and CPM candidate S. Mukherjee bagged 134175 votes
