New Delhi: In a first, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Friday announced that it has opened applications from women candidates for the entrance examination for the National Defence Academy (NDA) and Naval Academy.
The application notice was issued today and the last date for applying is October 8.
The announcement comes days after Supreme Court earlier this week rejected Centre's plea to allow women candidates to appear for the entrance exam to the NDA from next year, arguing that it does not want women to be denied their right.
However, the apex court denied Centre's plea saying that induction of women cannot be delayed by one year.
The interim order was passed on August 18 by a division bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Hrishikesh Roy, allowing women candidates to appear for the examination.
This examination is to fill up 370 posts in National Defence Academy and 30 posts in Naval Academy (10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme).
On September 8, nudged by the Supreme Court, Centre informed the top court that it has taken a decision to allow women into NDA. The top court, through an affidavit, had asked the Centre to inform it, what it is doing now? what is it planning to do in future?
Other than women candidates, if a candidate, of any gender other than female, applies then the candidate will be liable to penal action in terms of Rule 7 of the Rules for this Examination including debarment for 10 years from appearing at all future Examinations/Recruitments of the UPSC, an official notice read.
