Patna: The Patna district administration has ordered the closure of 76 government schools in rural areas until August 31 due to the rising water level of the Ganga River, which has crossed the danger mark in the state capital. This decision, aimed at ensuring the safety of students and teachers, follows a directive allowing District Magistrates to close schools in flood-prone areas. The closure comes shortly after a government school teacher was swept away by strong currents in the Ganga near Patna, as reported by news agency PTI.

Patna is currently experiencing hot and humid weather with intermittent sunshine. While no rain is immediately expected in the capital, the Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for moderate rain in several parts of Bihar, including Saran, Vaishali, and Patna. Wind speeds may reach 30-40 km/h, with a risk of lightning. Rain is expected across most of Bihar from August 29 to September 4, with showers likely in a few areas in each district.

In Nalanda, the Jirayan River is overflowing, causing floodwaters to enter several homes and a school in the Asthawan and Bind blocks. The river's water level suddenly rose to 62.42 meters, surpassing the danger level of 60.05 meters, mainly due to continuous rainfall in Jharkhand. As a result, low-lying areas, including Pitambar Bigha village, are flooded. A primary school in Pitambar Bigha has been relocated to another school. Additionally, a dam breach in Andi village led to fields being submerged.
