The University Grants Commission (UGC) has told Jadavpur University that the latter has not taken proactive measures to curb ragging in the university, and the commission is not happy with the report submitted by the varsity’s anti-ragging committee, following the death of a first-year student at the university. Earlier this week, the anti-ragging committee of the Jadavpur University submitted its report to the UGC following the death of a first-year Bengali Honours student, days after joining the university. The 19-year-old boy named Swapnadip Kundu, died after falling from the second-floor of the university’s main hostel. He hailed from Nagula in West Bengal’s Nadia district.
The death of the student has put the university administration into action following allegations that the deceased student was subjected to ragging in the campus. The West Bengal police have arrested a total of 9 people in the case. A total of 6 people were arrested yesterday for the alleged ragging behind the student’s death. The 6 arrested also include former students of the university, who were absconding, as per the police.
With the matter stirring up, the Dean of Students and the Registrar of Jadavpur University held a meeting with the Joint CP Crime of Kolkata Police at Lalbazar yesterday. The governor of West Bengal, Dr CV Ananda Bose also chaired an emergency meeting of the Jadavpur University Court at the Raj Bhavan yesterday.
The allegations of ragging behind the death of the student has drawn several eyeballs on the issue, surrounding Jadavpur University’s anti-ragging policies with numerous questions. Governor CV Ananda Bose who reached the spot after the death of the student consoled the deceased student’s father and assured him of appropriate actions against those responsible for his son’s death.
In the meanwhile, the West Bengal government has formed a four-member fact-finding committee to look into the student’s death at Jadavpur University. The committee will submit its report within two weeks, says the official notification released by the West Bengal government today, August 17, 2023.
